SGDsが提唱され、環境問題への意識もさらに高まりを見せる現代。課題のひとつである現行プラスチックの代替を実現する可能性を秘めているのが、私が研究している「超分子ゲル」です。
容易にリサイクルできる新時代のプラスチック
一般的に物質は、複数の分子が強く結びつく「共有結合」をすることで形を保っています。その一例として、プラスチックは、分子同士の強力な結びつきにより実生活で必要な強度を保つ反面、分解して廃棄したり、再利用をするのは困難とされています。
一方、超分子は「超分子相互作用」と呼ばれるゆるい結びつきで分子同士が繋がり、ネットワークを形成した状態を言います。ゆるい結びつきなので、温度変化や光などの外部刺激によって構成分子がくっついたり離れたりするほか、構成分子単独では発揮できない機能を発現するといった特徴があります。なかでも「超分子ゲル」は、この超分子相互作用を利用して作ったもので、液体と固体の中間のような物質です。
このゲルに光を当てたり水をつけたりといった外部刺激を加えると、ゲルの硬さが変わったり、伸縮したりと面白い変化が観測されます。
日々、実験を重ね、私たちはこのゲルが既存のプラスチック以上の強度になると見出しました。
このゲルは実生活で活用するのに十分な硬さを持ち、超分子作用で結びついているため外部刺激を加えることで、分解することも可能となります。

現在は、容易にリサイクル可能で環境問題に貢献できる新しい超分子ゲル材料の創製を目指して研究を進めています。
医療への貢献も視野に超分子結合の抱える課題と向き合う
私が取り組んでいる研究のひとつに、超分子ゲルを利用した「DDS(Drug Delivery System)」があります。これは薬物送達システムと呼ばれ、必要な部位に必要な量、必要な時間をかけて薬を届ける技術です。
研究ではタンパク質や多糖類で作ったゲルにモデル薬物を混ぜて乾燥させ、フィルム状にしたものの分析しています。ゲルにはあらかじめ服薬する人に合わせて適切な量の薬を混ぜることができます。また、フィルム状にすることで絆創膏や化粧品のシートマスクのように皮膚に応用できるのもポイントです。

しかし、超分子相互作用で繋がる物質は外部刺激に弱いため、共有結合と比べ安定性を欠きます。安定性を向上させるためには、強度の高いフィルムを作ると薬の放出量は減ってしまいます。
反対に、フィルムに伸縮性を持たせると薬の放出量は増えますが、安定性がなくなってしまうというジレンマがあります。
こうした課題を解決するためデータを集め、社会での実用化を目指し、研究を続けています。
